Nuts with locking function

Versatile: Our nuts provide the right locking mechanism for every application.

Nuts with locking function DIN 982.

Secure and versatile

The nuts prevent the loosening of screw connections

Nuts with locking function are always required when the integrity of the screw connection is at risk due to high dynamic loads, which cannot be excluded using design measures. The nuts are used to prevent the loosening of the pre-tensioning force.

Method and principle

Overview of nuts with locking function

Principle

The locking function can be established by mechanical means (e.g. clamping or locking), with chemical additives, or using design or process-based methods on the nut.

Material

In addition to steel (various strengths), available materials include A2 and A4 stainless steel, plastic and brass.

Surfaces

Our steel products can be provided uncoated, or with galvanized, nickel-plated or zinc-flake coatings. The galvanized variants can also be thick-layer passivated, mechanically zinc-plated, yellow galvanized or blackened.

Working principle of the locking functions

Screw connections must be properly secured for the intended use. The correct mechanism must be selected to ensure the functioning of machines and components. A distinction is made between three groups:

Screw connections must be properly secured for the intended use. The correct mechanism must be selected to ensure the functioning of machines and components. A distinction is made between three groups:

  • Setting locks

These use elastic components to compensate for relaxation and creep phenomena. As a result, a portion of the pre-tensioning force can be retained and the connection holds fast.

  • Locking devices

These increase the friction on the screw bolt using chemical or mechanical clamping mechanisms. The increased torque prevents full loosening of the nut. At the same time, loss of pre-tensioning force can be kept to a minimum.

  • Anti-rotation locks

By causing the partner threads to lock mechanically or adhere to one another, these are able to maintain at least 80% of the previously applied pre-tensioning force, even when subject to high dynamic loads. This is essential to keep a component in operation in safety-relevant applications.

Types of nuts with locking function

  • Combination nuts with locking function

The combination nuts with captive rotatable washer combine the advantages of combination elements with additional functions such as setting and locking. They reduce assembly time and increase the quality of the assembly, preventing setting in the connection and increasing the pre-tensioning force.
We can provide you with version B 53010 as a combination with a standard nut and version B53011 squeezed lock nut. The latter effectively counteracts a loss of pre-tensioning even under dynamic loads.

    Standards

    • B 53010
    • B 53011
  • Hexagon nuts with clamping function

The locking effect is created using either a clamping part or an offset thread, or by squeezing against the hexagonal surfaces. This creates constant friction – over the entire circumference of the thread or just part of it. The locking mechanisms prevent the screw connection from coming apart by itself.

    Standards

    • DIN 980 similar to ISO 7042
    • DIN 982 similar to ISO 7040
    • DIN 985 similar to ISO 10511
    • DIN 6924 similar to ISO 7040
    • DIN 6925 similar to ISO 7042
    • DIN 6926 similar to EN 1663
    • DIN 6927 similar to EN 1664

  • Self-locking nuts

This type of nut is also screwed onto a male thread and its spring sheet bites into the thread, increasing the friction in the thread. The self-locking nut is similar to a PAL nut.

    Standards

    • DIN 7967
    • B 53012 similar to DIN 6923
  • Vargal® self-locking nuts

The Vargal® self-locking nut is a locking device that increases the clamping force through the nut thread. The four-slotted nut collar is pulled inwards around its entire circumference by a spring, so that the affected threads exert increased force on the screw thread. Because the component is made entirely from metal, the clamping force remains constant even when it is reused several times. The Vargal® self-locking nuts are processed like conventional nuts and comply with the federal railway standard BN 205 107 B.

    Standards

    • B 53040
  • Castle nuts

Castle nuts are mechanical locking devices. The “castle” contains a guide for guiding a splint through a cross hole in the screw thread and fixing it in place. This ensures that even if there is a loss of pre-tensioning force, the nut is not lost.

    Standards

    • DIN 935
    • DIN 979 similar to ISO 7038
  • Hexagon cap nuts with clamping part

Cap nuts include internal nylon ring are closed on one side where they end in a “cap” or in a blind hole thread on the inside. This protects the screw connection on both sides from dirt and water. It also ensures a clean and aesthetic finish, as well as a secure screw connection.

    Standards

    • DIN 986
  • ZAHN self-locking nuts

The locking effect is achieved by locking teeth that penetrate the contact material to the entire tooth depth when tightened. The nut material must be harder than the mounting material. When unscrewing, the teeth scratch the contact surface of the mounting material. This abrasive effect damages the surface, which means that these nuts should only be used with careful consideration, especially for painted surfaces. If you want to avoid damage to a surface, we recommend using RIPP LOCK® self-locking nuts.
