Sustainability as a compass

Our sustainability strategy

We are systematically driving forward the issue of sustainability. Because long-term strategies are important signposts - especially in challenging times.

Planet, People, Partnership

Anchoring sustainability in the corporate strategy

We are pursuing the goal of being CO₂-neutral by 2030 - according to Scope 1 and 2.

Scope 1 covers the direct emissions of greenhouse gases in our company - for example, through the burning of natural gas, diesel and gasoline for heating or travel. Scope 2 covers the indirect emissions of greenhouse gases by energy suppliers, primarily through the purchase of electricity.

To achieve our goal, we have included sustainability as a focus topic in our current corporate strategy and are pursuing numerous specific measures. However, we understand sustainability not only as the responsibility for our environment, but also as a commitment to our employees, society and acting in line with the expectations of other interest groups.

Global responsibility

The Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations

In 2015, the UN adopted the 17 "Sustainable Development Goals" (SDGs). As a central component of the 2030 Agenda, they set out the most pressing global challenges in terms of sustainability at an economic, social and environmental level. We are committed to these political goals and want to make a concrete contribution to the sustainable development of our world - particularly through SDGs 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12 and 13.

Materiality analysis

Always keeping an eye on the key sustainability issues

The aim of the materiality analysis was to lay the foundation for a sustainability management system for the entire Böllhoff Group. To ensure that all aspects were taken into account, we involved the internal representatives of all our stakeholders in this development process. Together, we examined the relevant topics using tried-and-tested standards and formats and assessed their importance for us. The result is a complete list of topics that are important to the Böllhoff Group and its stakeholders - divided into three fields of action: Planet, People and Partnership.

With this materiality analysis, we ensure that everyone involved works as effectively as possible on the issues that are crucial to our goals.

THREE DIMENSIONS

Our fields of action, topics and goals

In the strategy development process, the Böllhoff Group defined three dimensions or fields of action for the sustainability strategy. In turn, all fields of action focus on key topics and objectives. This ensures that we stay on course with our sustainability activities at all times.

  • Planet

On the one hand, the Planet field of action focuses on our products and services, which enable lightweight construction, downsizing of components and material savings, for example. On the other hand, it is also about developing measures to ensure that our products can be manufactured more sustainably. In terms of content, these range from the use of renewable energies to the optimization of processes in order to minimize waste.

    Our key topics and objectives

    Renewable energies:

    • Expanding in-house renewable electricity generation by commissioning additional photovoltaic systems
    • By the end of 2024: Increase the proportion of self-generated energy within Germany to 20 % of our total consumption (target had to be postponed due to supply difficulties with photovoltaic components. Next review planned for the end of 2024.)
    • Conduct feasibility study on the construction of wind turbines at German company locations

    Production and logistics:

    • By the end of 2024: Reduce CO₂ emissions in Scope 1 and 2 by 25 % (compared to base year 2021)
    • By 2030: Achieve CO₂ neutrality in Scope 1 and 2 (through a mix of reduction and compensation measures)
    • Carry out transparent measurements of indirect emissions in the upstream and downstream value chain (Scope 3)
    • Participation in the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)

    Environmental and climate protection:

    • Introduce a cross-national sustainability committee
    • Establishing an international sustainability management system

    Sustainable supply chain:

    • Expand supplier management system to include environmental and social risks
    • By 2024: evaluate all suppliers with regard to sustainability criteria

    Innovative products and processes:

    • By 2024: Create product carbon footprints for Highrunner articles
    • Increase the recyclability of our packaging, for example through reusable packaging and new materials
  • People

The aim of the People field of action is to strengthen the long-term well-being of our employees. We take a variety of approaches to achieve this: from further training opportunities to promote individual skills and comprehensive occupational health and safety measures to attractive additional benefits for all employees.

    Our key topics and objectives

    Education:

    • Prevent the shortage of skilled workers by continuously improving our own training

    Attractive employer:

    • Internal: Further increase employee satisfaction and identification with the company
    • External: Being the first choice for talents looking for a company

    Further training:

    • Identify and serve training needs within the company even more effectively
    • Introducing agile methods

    Occupational health and safety:

    • Vision Zero: No accidents at work

    Diversity:

    • Systematically increasing diversity within the company
  • Partnership

As a fourth-generation family business with regional roots, we put people at the heart of everything we do. That is why we are also committed to the society in which we live - with our own foundations, donations and personal commitment.

    Our key topics and objectives

    Social commitment:

    • Strengthening international commitment
    • Expanding youth development
    • Promoting the voluntary commitment of employees
    • Strengthening the region

    Compliance and transparency:

    • Compliance with applicable guidelines: Legal provisions and Böllhoff rules of the compliance system

"As a company, we are working on continuous improvement in the area of sustainability and constantly creating more transparency. Transparency about where we are today. Transparency about what we are already doing well. And most importantly: transparency about where we can leverage further potential."

Interdisciplinary task

Organization of sustainability in the company

We take an interdisciplinary and international approach to promoting sustainability within the company. This is because sustainability is a topic that affects numerous areas of the company and each of these specialist areas contributes to greater sustainability within the company with its own measures. Since 2024, our international Sustainability Guides have ensured that cross-border measures are not only coordinated and implemented from Germany, but also directly at our locations worldwide.

The Corporate Quality Sustainability (CQS) department forms the central interface. This is where all the requirements and measures of the various departments are brought together and bundled into a networked overall strategy. The CQS actively involves all departments in the further development of the sustainability strategy. The head of the CQS department reports directly to the company management.
